This week at the farm:
The onions are ready to harvest! How do we know when to harvest? Well, the tops of the onion will start to turn yellow (see photo) and eventually will fall over. Once we see that, we pull them and cure them for storage. This is accomplished by laying the onions in a single layer in one of the greenhouses to dry. As the onions are drying their necks will gradually
wither and the papery skins will tighten around the bulbs. Once the necks are completely dry, and the root and leaves have been trimmed, they are ready to go to the market. This process typically takes between 2 to 4 weeks. The sunflowers love this weather! It is the peak of the sunflower season and we will be bringing several varieties with us this week. Be sure to take a look when you see us at the market.
